Undeclared ingredients are always a cause for concern, especially when they have the potential to affect over 3 million Americans.

More Than 2,000 Desserts Have Been Recalled in 16 States

Health experts say food allergies in the U.S. have been on the rise in recent decades, now affecting almost 32 million Americans. “If you think about the average classroom, that could be two or three children with severe allergies in one room,” warns the National Institutes of Health.
So it’s no wonder we’re all looking at ingredient labels more closely these days, especially when it comes time to bring treats to share (or enjoy alone!). But before you indulge your latest sweet tooth craving, there’s a widely distributed crowd favorite now being recalled due to one of the most common food allergies.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has informed the public about a recall affecting 2,382 pies from Massachusetts-based Dianne’s Fine Desserts.
Though an outer carton and the product inside are labeled as “Cookie Butter Banana Pie,” an inner carton is labeled as “Tropical Key Lime Pie,” per the FDA’s report. The report seems to indicate the actual pie product is indeed the Cookie Butter Banana Pie.
“Contains undeclared allergens (almonds)” is the given reason for the recall. Almonds are tree nuts, representing one of the most common food allergies in the U.S. Notably, the FDA report does not further clarify if the allergen was left off the Cookie Butter Banana Pie label, the Tropical Key Lime Pie label, or both.
The Dianne’s Fine Desserts website states that they are a “leading provider of premium frozen thaw-and-serve desserts to the foodservice industry.” Though the company doesn’t specify who they supply to, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, catering services, and even some school cafeterias are all widely considered to be part of the foodservice industry.
The FDA says 16 states received the now-recalled product: California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, 0.5 to 1% of the U.S. population has a tree nut allergy. Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews, and pistachios are the most commonly reported tree nuts allergies, says the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organization.
